Construction Starts at Chilla Junction

Devonshire Homes has announced that:

Construction has started this week at our latest new homes site, Chilla Junction at Halwill Junction.

Devonshire Homes is working with Porteous Groundworks to bring 32 new homes to the 1.9 hectare development near Okehampton. Located at Chilla Road, Chilla Junction will offer a mix of one, two, three, four and five bedroom homes which will include apartments, bungalows and houses, nine of which will fall under Devonshire Homes’ affordable homes contribution.

Properties will complement the local environment so that homes embed well into the village. Nestled in the Devon countryside, the site benefits from easy access to the A30 and A386. First occupations are expected in spring 2024.

The Devonshire Homes team enjoyed visiting the site this week to welcome on board Porteous Groundworks and to celebrate the turf cutting. Pictured left to right is Craig Rutherford (Senior Site Manager); Steve Allmett (Contracts Manager); Jane Pearce (Sales and Marketing Director); Paul Coombes (Construction Director) and Doug Wright (Sales Manager).

It’s exciting that work is now underway and we look forward to seeing these new homes for local house hunters start to take shape.

Here’s how the Chilla Junction site looked earlier today as we strolled past:

[Update – August 9th]

On Monday we’d wanted to turn right at the mini roundabout in Halwill Junction in order to take the shortest route to Bideford. However the road was closed, so we had to take a detour in the direction of Holsworthy.

Chilla Road is closed again today, and this time I took some photographs. Here’s a selection:

[Update – September 1st]

The yellow signs we’ve been looking at for the past few weeks state that “This road will be closed from 07/08/23 to 01/09/23”. September 1st has now arrived, and the roadworks are not quite complete this evening:

[Update – September 4th]

The roadworks have been completed over the weekend, and the road is now (almost?) as good as new:

To be continued…

I've been programming computers since the late 60s. In those days they didn't have computers in schools, so we had to build our own. What can I program next? Will I have to build it first?

This morning there’s a trench across the road between the Post Office and the Junction Inn, which is currently blocked to all traffic.

A helpful Porteous Groundworks employee informed me that they are in the middle of connecting the new Chilla Junction development to the local sewage system, and that they endeavour to ensure that the road is open for local residents every night.

A postman setting off for his morning round in his red van said the required diversion would add 10-15 minutes to his trip.

This morning the entrance to the car park for the shops in Halwill Junction is open:

That didn’t stop somebody parking on our drive:

Just as well we weren’t in a desperate rush to drive somewhere!
